Impact of inflation on the Ontario sunshine list
Since 1996, the $100,000 threshold has not changed. The effect of increasing this threshold is dramatic:
- Canadian consumer price index (CPI) has increased by 50.05% from 1996 to 2016 >> source
- In 2018, there were 151,040 individuals on the sunshine list
- If the threshold were to follow the CPI, the size of the 2018 list would have been reduced by 85%, to 23,208 people.
- Put differently, in terms of the purchasing power of a Canadian Dollar buying Canadian goods and services, a $100,000 threshold in 2018 is equivalent to $66,644 in 1996.
